We are proud to have internationally renowned choreographer LaVelle Smith Jr as Patron of WE ARE MD Group and an ambassador for our community work.
His involvement brings global experience, inspiration and mentorship to the work we deliver across the Liverpool City Region.
Our Story
The relationship between WE ARE MD Group and LaVelle Smith Jr is built on a lifelong connection to dance, inspiration and opportunity.
Our Founder, Miguel Doforo, has been a lifelong fan of Michael Jackson. At just 10 years old, he attended a live performance at Aintree in Liverpool, where LaVelle Smith Jr was performing as a dancer on what was his first tour with Michael Jackson.
That moment had a lasting impact.
From that point on, Miguel began studying LaVelle’s style, movement and choreography. At the time, he was largely self-taught, and La Velle’s influence played a key role in shaping his development as a dancer and creative.
Over the years, Miguel followed Michael Jackson’s tours, continuing to watch and learn — with La Velle consistently present as both performer and choreographer.
As Miguel’s own work grew, his dance company at the time, MD Productions, began performing choreography inspired by that era, including pieces such as “Dangerous” and “2 Bad (Ghosts)”, both associated with LaVelle’s work.
This journey eventually led to opportunities for MD Productions to perform for Michael Jackson in London — a full-circle moment that reflected years of dedication, influence and growth
The Beginning of a Connection
In 2024, while focusing on both professional development and personal growth, Miguel was encouraged to seek out a mentor.
Naturally, he thought of La Velle Smith Jr and reached out.
At first, there was no response, and the moment seemed to pass.
Months later, however, LaVelle replied. He explained that he had been locked out of his account and asked how he could help.
From there, the conversation began.
What started as a simple connection quickly developed into something far more meaningful.
Both shared a deep passion for creativity, development, and creating opportunities for others.

A Shared Vision
Later that same year, LaVelle visited Liverpool to deliver workshops.
During this visit, he connected directly with the work being delivered by WE ARE MD Group and See You See Me CIC.
He gained insight into the projects and communities being supported.
During this time, Miguel shared details of a developing creative project titled “Freedom.”
The project was inspired by themes of history, identity, and expression.
It was closely connected to the Liverpool docks and the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.
A visit to the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool became a defining moment.
It strengthened the connection between history, storytelling, creativity, and access to the arts.
It became clear that the vision of using creativity as a tool to create access, opportunity, and understanding strongly aligned with LaVelle’s own values.
CHOREOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR
This collaboration led to the creation of the MD Productions & LaVelle Smith Jr Choreographer of the Year.
This annual programme supports aspiring choreographers through:
• Mentoring and development
• Creative exploration
• Performance opportunities
• A live final showcase
The programme provides a platform for emerging talent to develop and present work within a professional setting.

LaVelle Smith Jr
LaVelle Smith Jr is an internationally respected choreographer, dancer and creative consultant.
He has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Beyoncé, Usher, Diana Ross, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, TLC, George Michael, Ricky Martin and Brandy.
He is widely recognised for his 23-year creative partnership with Michael Jackson, working as both dancer and choreographer on the Bad, Dangerous and HIStory World Tours.
La Velle has also worked across film and television, including choreography for Coyote Ugly and performances within major productions.
His work has received multiple award nominations and recognition, including MTV Awards for choreography, an Emmy nomination and a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to dance.
Today, he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of performers and creatives worldwide.
